![]() I then added another adjustment layer, this time I changed the brightness and contrast to make it more gritty like Ramos’. I then added a black and white adjustment layer using the ‘Blue Filter’ preset. I then deleted the background and cropped the image 1 x 1. This was easy enough to do since the photo was taken at a low f stop, so I was in focus and photoshop could detect the edges. I started by using the selection tool to crop myself out of the image. I chose to use this photo since it was a clear shoulder shot that I felt I would be able to easily manipulate to recreate one of Shane Ramos’ collages. Therefore, there is no contact sheet for this project. This photo wasn’t part of a photoshoot, rather a candid shot during the production of a video shoot. I also created a mock up on photoshop of what I planned the collage to look like: I also took his handprint, his ‘Bad Vibes Forever’ logo and his letters from when he was in prison to collage. I started by taking images online of music artist XXXTentacion, and cutting them out roughly like Ramos does. I feel like this also brings out the edges and detail of the watercolours. The colours feel sombre yet dramatic and still ‘pop’. I felt like this looked a bit too artificial however Finally, I changed the hue of all colours to experiment with different colour watercolours altogether Overall, I feel like this is the best experiment I made. Here, I took out most of the blues and magentas I then darkened just the reds to give the image an ‘inky’ look I also experimented with the level curves and drowned the blacks a little to give it a more dramatic/damaged look On the flip side, I experimented with upping the saturation and vibrance on all colours. I then upped the saturation and contrast to make it ‘pop’ more I also experimented with desaturatring certain colours. This time round, I painted the purple under the red to make it ‘pop’ more. I then painted it the same way with watercolours. I like the previous image but I felt like I could do better with the line drawing, so I chose this image and redrew it. ![]() I then scanned in my work and used the dodge and burn tool as well as the smudge tool subtly to enhance the image. I also used this technique with the bright red mouth, which James does frequently. I used smudging to blend the lighter pinky pastel colours in with the skin. Another technique often used is smudging. I used curved strokes of bright pink which wrapped around the eyebrows, eye sockets and bridge of the nose. A common thing that James does in her work is use bright colours to define detail. ![]() ![]() To add detail to the face, I used a lighter pinky pastel to lighten areas roughly, especially around the edges of the face and along the hair. I then did the same for the hair using a deep red colour, as well as the jumper and neck. I firstly coloured the background with a dull yellow, then used a pinky pastel to define the head and coloured it in, missing out the area around the eyes to maintain the detail. This was so that I could get the same detailed eyes that can be seen in James’ work. I decided to print the image out and draw over it. Since I wasn’t confident enough with James’ style yet, I used it to experiment. I started with this image that I found on my USB stick.
